Hornby LNER Hitachi Azuma class 800/1, Five car unit

On 18 March, 2016, Sir Richard Branson unveiled the first Class 800/1 unit to be branded in Virgin Trains East Coast ‘Azuma’ livery at Kings Cross Station.

Since then, the Hitachi fleet of IEP test trains, based at the new Doncaster Carr Depot, have completed thousands of hours of testing over the ECML and while Virgin Trains East Coast (VTEC) have been replaced as franchise holders by London North Eastern Railway (LNER), ‘Azuma’ five and nine car sets are due to commence public services on the East Coast Main Line during early 2019.

The Diagram 118 boiler was fitted after a Works visit in February/March 1958, by which time Sun Castle was back on the East Coast Main Line, variously allocated between New England, Grantham and Doncaster sheds.

Having served on general duties, 60523 was withdrawn from service on 16 June 1963 from New England shed.

The Diagram 118 boiler was fitted to 60512 Steady Aim during a Doncaster Works visit in October/November 1957 and the locomotive finished its days in Scotland, having been allocated to St. Margaret’s shed on 2 December 1962 and being withdrawn from service while at Dundee, on 14 June 1965.

60501 Cock o’ the North spent eighty-three days in Doncaster Works between 24 June and 14 September 1944 being rebuilt to Class A2/2 and received the Diagram 118 boiler during a general overhaul at Doncaster between 17 September and 24 October 1952. 60501 Cock o’ the North was allocated to 50A York (North) at this time, mainly working fast goods and slow passenger turns.

But there were occasional appearances on southbound York passenger diagrams working to Kings Cross, odd appearances on the Great Central line and the occasional diagram between Leeds and York with Neville Hill crews.

On 28 June 2003 the locomotive was renamed Pride of Acton, retaining that name until March 2010 after which the locomotive was moved to storage, pending overhaul as a ‘Super Sixty’.

Returning to traffic, on 16 June 2018, 60100 was named Midland Railway Ð Butterley during Butterley’s Diesel Gala.

Fleetingly allocated to Crewe North at the outbreak of war in 1939, Queen Maud moved to the shed permanently on 22 May 1943 where it remained, apart from a two month stint at Edge Hill in 1956, until withdrawn on 7 October 1961.

Hornby class 6MT 72007 “CLAN MACKINTOSH” RENAMED

Based upon the Britannia Class locomotives, the BR Standard Class 6 ‘Clan Class’ was a 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive designed by Robert Riddles to operate mixed traffic with an increased route availability. Changes included a smaller boiler, smaller cylinders and various other weight saving measures. Due to a shortage of steel only 10 of the class were ever built.

The class were not hugely popular due to being less capable in comparison to the visually similar BR standard Class 7 locomotives they were based upon.
